With superb, round, deep red-purple fruits, the interior of ‘Countess’ is red to yellow with a wonderfully sweet, rich flavour. Excellent eating quality is guaranteed with the stone easily pulling away from the juicy flesh when ripe, but this plum can also be used in cooking. A profusion of white flowers in spring heralds the anticipation of plum puddings to come!
- Garden care: When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Mirrabells and other stone fruits should be pruned in the summer because they are prone to a disease called Silver Leaf which enters through cuts. If you prune in late summer, the flow of sap is slowing down but is still running fast enough to seal up any wounds. Check and remove any damaged, diseased or broken branches.
